Bear is a beautiful and flexible writing app for crafting notes and prose.

Our take

Beautiful, clean, and simple writing app.

Alright, so Bear is this note-taking app that folks seem to rave about. At first glance, it’s pretty slick-looking and feels easy on the eyes. The design isn’t too busy, which I dig, and it doesn’t bombard you with a million options right off the bat. You can just focus on writing, and that’s a nice change of pace from some other apps that try to do too much. Bear keeps it simple, and I appreciate that. But, if you’re someone who needs a bunch of features like project management or fancy formatting, you might find it lacking.

One thing that caught my attention is how it handles tags. You can add hashtags to your notes for organization, and it makes finding stuff later super easy. It’s not revolutionary, but it works well enough. However, if you’re used to more traditional folder setups, this might take some getting used to. I’d say give it a shot because it feels pretty smooth once you’re in the groove. But again, it’s a bit different, so it might not be everyone’s cup of tea.

Now, let’s talk about syncing. Bear syncs across all your Apple devices using iCloud, which is great if you’re deep into the Apple ecosystem. Your notes are just there, no fuss. But, if you’re on Android or Windows, you’re out of luck. This is a dealbreaker for some folks. It’s almost like Bear assumes everyone’s got an iPhone, iPad, and MacBook. So, if you’re not Team Apple, you might want to look elsewhere.

Bear also lets you export your notes in a bunch of formats, which is handy if you need to share your stuff or back it up outside the app. You can go with PDF, HTML, DOCX, and a few others. That’s a nice touch, especially for those times when you need something more than just a note stuck in an app. But, be aware that the export feature is part of the paid subscription. So you’ve got to weigh if that’s worth it for you.

Overall, Bear is a solid choice if you’re looking for a straightforward, no-nonsense note-taking app and you’re living in the Apple world. It’s not trying to be everything to everyone, which is refreshing. But, if you’re expecting collaboration features or cross-platform capabilities, you might find Bear a bit too bare-bones. It does what it does well, but it knows what it wants to be and doesn’t stray from that path. So, it’s really about whether this fits into how you like to work.
